Clive Bell: The View from Snob’s Hill

That’s the title of one essay in my forthcoming book Debating Faith. Here is an example of Bell’s amazing elitism:

” How are the civilizing few to be supplied with the necessary security and leisure save at the expense of the many?… Civilization requires the existence of a leisured class, and a leisured class requires the existence of slaves – of people, I mean, who give some part of their surplus time and energy to the support of others…[the select few must be above] the soul-destroying dominion of circumstances”:

Clive Bell, Civilization (1928), pp. 175-176.

Lancelot Hogben: A Difficult Hero

Hogben was an eminent biologist, radical scientist, an outspoken opponent of Nazi race theory and eugenics, a Quaker pacifist in the First World War, a feminist  and an awkward and difficult personality. Hilaire Belloc on the Crisis of Civilization

Hilaire Belloc

Why was western civilization in dire decline? Hilaire Belloc asked this question and gave his analysis in his book The Crisis of Civilization (1937). He sheets most of the blame to those great historical explosions, the Reformation and the rise of modern capitalism. They together had undermined the moral fabric of Christendom and led to widespread poverty, dependence and wage-slavery, which in turn led to resistance movements such as communism. He urged a return to medieval ideals of community and Christian love.
